Windows networks support 2 directory service models
Microsoft Windows networks support 2 directory service models
- Workgroup model - A peer to peer type network ,seen as a standalone model, there is no central server managing the network , does not use central directory database
- Domain model - Machines that run windows operating systems that share a central directory database called Active Directory
Active Directory
Active Directory is a directory service which contains information of all user accounts and shared resources on a network. It uses domains, domain controllers, organisational units and group policy to manage administration. There are 2 main ways of installing
Installation of Active directory
- Using the Active Directory Installation Wizard
- Using DCPROMO from the command line
The main features of active directory
- Allows administrators to assign policies, deploy software, and apply critical updates to an organization
- Provides user logon and authentication services
- Organise and manage user accounts, computers, groups, network resources using Group Policy
Domain
Active directory cannot exist without a domain, a logical secure administrative boundary. By having a domain you have a domain controller
Domain Controller
This the main tool within Active Directory, the domain controller allows you to hold user account details, authenticates user’s logon details and enforce security policy for a Windows domain.
How to indentify domain controller
- Go to Start
- Click in Run
- Type CMD – press ENTER
- Type net_accounts ENTER
- Shows primary controller
Organisational Units (OU)
A container which contains Active Directory Objects (Users, Groups, OU & other objects) used for minimizing administrative tasks.
Group Policy
- Allow or deny users to logon to a particular machine
- Allow or deny users access to particular software
- Restricting access to certain folder
- Type net_accounts ENTER
- Disabling downloading certain files
Examples of Group Policy
A container which contains Active Directory Objects (Users, Groups, OU & other objects) used for minimizing administrative tasks.
